Federation diplomats report negligible progress
19-Feb-2010     Federation Associated Press
The embassy dispatched to negotiate a more stable truce between the Gorn Hegemony and the Klingon Empire has met with limited success.

As expected, the most serious bone of contention on the agenda of the talks is the continued occupation and reinforcement of Gila VI, formerly a Gorn world, by the Klingons. The Federation's negotiating team, comprising notable experts on both sides involved in the conflict, including a former Starfleet commander who served as a liaison for King Xrathis, the deceased father of the Hegemony's current ruler, has been unable to get either side in the conflict to agree to terms of reference for that aspect of the negotiation.

However, progress has been made on other concerns. In an attempt to stop the conflict escalating, the Federation's diplomats have been able to get the Klingons and Gorn to agree to cease-fires in a number of key sectors seen as potential spark points. Neither the Empire nor the Hegemony has countenanced discussing giving up their claims to any of the territory in question, but the withdrawal of "surplus war materiel" is seen as a step in the direction of rapprochement, if not quite peace.
